Genre: Fiction or Novels
Author: Debabrata Nath.
Debjani Chakraborty aka Debjani Moitra writes the story of her life?the life she lived and the life she heard about from everyone around.
It?s a story of almost seventy years?a story that begins with Debjani?s grandma in a remote village some seventy kilometres away from the city of Calcutta- Debipur. The story of Binodini does not end with her own life; it is inherited in the person of her granddaughter Debjani. As Debjani journeys forth to Hindmotor, an industrial town in the Hoogly district by virtue of her marriage, the story comes to that very town and then it goes back to Chinsurah, another small town in the same district. It was Chinsurah where lived Sabita, Debjani's mother-in-law. Debi writes the story of three ?her own, Binodini's and Sabita?s. We witness how Time did and undid the Middle-Class and how the once celebrated joint-families tragically morph into tiny nuclear units. Debjani writes the stories of not only the three generations of the Bengali middle-class women; she records the unbelievable stories of grand leaps ? from scarcity to moderate affluence ? the almost strange tale of rural Bengal in its colonial and post-colonial realities, the magic-like story of the rise of the Middle-Class and the tragic history of its disintegration.
The story ends in?Calcutta, nay Kolkata, the city which was probably the labour-theatre of the Bengali Middle-Class and which again in its Globalised Avatar paved the way of its disintegration.
Debjani witnessed that slow disintegration of the grand dreams, but denied to be a part of it and in one obsolete, deserted attic of the big city she dreams of starting a new life ? not the Middle-Class one, not a kind of life hitherto conceived or possibly lived?but a life that sounds cinema-like, yet very much within the reach of us ?the ordinary humanity. Debjani writes that story but at the cost of long forty-two years? Debjani Chakraborty aka Debjani Moitra is now past her prime and writes the story she lived, heard and dreamt?the story of dust and grass.
